Inspiration...
One thing we strongly believe here at the International
Youth Council is that everyone can help make a difference
in this world which we live....
Consider this:
You might not be the leader of a country...
and you might not have lots of money.....
But all you really need is an idea and determination!
Lets have a look at two young people who decided they
really wanted to take ACTION:
1. Craig Kielburger,
founder of Free The Children:
Craig was only 12 years old when he got some friends
together to begin fighting child labour. What started
as a small action plan, has grown into the world's largest
network of children helping less fortunate children
through education. It is a great example of
how we, as young citizens, can make a difference in the world.

1st Activity:
As a new group, work out what were some of the FIRST things that
the 12 year old Craig Kielburger and his friends did to start his

2. Severn Suzuki,
the girl who silenced the world for 6 minutes:
At the age of 9, Severn founded the Environmental
Children's Organisation, a group of children dedicated
to teaching other young people about environmental
issues. She was invited to attend the Earth Summit when
she was 12 and gave a speech on environmental issues
representing the youth of the world. Her speech
became famous and she became known as the girl who
silenced the world for 6 minutes.

2nd Activity:

PART 2 : Action Plan
WHAT'S OUR ISSUE
So, now for the major task!
Your team is to agree on a global issue you wish to
explore further and take action on. It is important at
this stage to examine your Evaluation Rubric so
you have a clear understanding as to what's expected.
Once you have decided on a particular issue, as a team,
use the resources provided so far within this WebQuest as
well as other resources you can find. For example:
> Library resources
> Internet searches/resources
> Interviewing / contacting experts etc.
To be clear on your issue, as a group, you must
prepare a 100 word written statement to present
to other Youth Council teams as part of your action plan.
The statement must explain:
-The issue you have chosen to take action on.
- Who is affected by this issue?
-Why your team is concerned about this issue
and taking action?
Week 5
PART 1: What Action are you going to take?
The action plan you decide on is totally up to you....
there are no boundaries.
However, it is critical that you devise an action plan
to fit in with your 4 week time-frame. Also, teams work
best when each member has a certain role to play. Be sure
that each team member is assigned a role so that responsibility
is shared as you accomplish your task. Ask your teacher if
you need help sorting out roles. (role ideas explained on teachers page)
Here are some things to think about:
Who can we help?
Who or where should we focus our attention?
What action is currently being taken? Will you be taking a 'new' action or become part of an existing action?
Team Roles: What special skills or helpful resources do we all bring to the team?
Are there any experts or organisations we can contact for advice?

Remember! There is a group ACTION PLAN due in just a couple of weeks time.
Make sure that you each have your ROLES organised within the group.
You can always refer back to your Action Plan Rubric
to make sure you have all areas covered.
PART 2 : YOUR ACTION PLAN PRESENTATIONS
It is time to really think about how you, as a team, are going to share
all this great information on your issue,
and your super Action Plan you have put together, to the class!
Keep investigating and putting together ideas
- but here are also a few presentation ideas to think about:
1. Plan your poster/visual presentation:
What information will you include?
How will you set it out?
What maps, pictures or graphs/statistics might you include?
2.Plan your verbal/dramatic presentation to the class
Will you need props?
Will you use any other resources to present with?
Will everyone speak? Timing for each speaker?

Week 6
PART 1: Finalising your presentations of the Plan
This is the last opportunity you have as a group to finalise your Action Plan presentation.
This is your chance, as a team, to show your knowledge and express your feelings about an
important global issue and how you intend to do something about it!
As mentioned before, please refer to the rubric so your group can give a relevant
and detailed presentation including a visual poster with a Mission Statement and
relevant information headings. Remember to consider details such as
location, timing and resources required for the plan itself!
The presentation of your action plan to the class
is an important part of the TAKING ACTION step itself.
Your presentations should be clear, well organised and
take around 10 minutes including time for questions
and feedback.
PART 2: The PRESENTATION
You, as a group will present your Action Plan back to the class.
You will get feedback from your class of fellow Youth Council
members as well as your teacher. The Aim of the feedback is to
give you ideas to improve your plan of Action,
which will increase your chances of a successful outcome!
(Note: The Action Plan Rubric from the EVALUATION page
will be used by the teacher, as well as 2 other peers,
to help assess your presentation)
